System Spotlight : Through the Breach

In 2009, Wyrd Publishing produced the world of Malifaux, both a city-state and a world in a parallel dimension. This world was created in 1787 after our own world was threatened by the decline of magic, and magicians looking for a new source of magic discovered a world separated from ours by a thin barrier. Through the Breach is an RPG set in the world of Malifaux where you, the player, are thrust into the newly reopened breach back, seeking fame, fortune and riches.

Roleplaying 102 : Encouraging Roleplay at the Table

For newer players especially, slipping into roleplaying a character can be challenging or outright scary. It can be difficult to step outside of yourself, to find your character’s voice, or feel silly to talk to your friends in a made-up voice. This week, Sara & Rob examine what Storytellers can do to encourage roleplaying at the table, and make staying in character less intimidating and more fun for everyone.

Creating Lifelike NPCs

As a Storyteller you are the world around your players, and as such you give it life and tone. Each character you play – Non-Player Characters or NPCs – has to feel unique. But how do you come up with voices, traits, or quirks for this myriad of necessary characters? This week, Sara and Rob discuss methods of making your non-player characters feel less like talking heads, and more like living, breathing inhabitants of your story’s world.

System Spotlight : Star Wars

Star Wars is an epic universe that spans a millennia of time, thousands of races, all from a galaxy far far away. But when did it become an RPG? And where can you start to tell a story within it? Well “strap in kid” as Rob and Sara jump back to the beginning with West End games and travel through to the current incarnation with Fantasy flight, where they will focus most of their force

Conflict Resolution at the Table

We have all had players argue their interpretation of a rule, take fifteen minutes debating with another player on the proper tactics, or sit in silence because of another player’s robust play style only to rant in private later. Storytellers are there to keep the game going, but also to keep it fun. This week Sara and Rob review how to manage, de-escalate, and work through conflict at the table

Organic Lore Exposition

Did you just spend 45 minutes explaining in detail the structures, culture and city of the Orc empire, while your players nodded off? Is there a better way to show the differences in your world versus the stock campaign settings presented in modern fantasy? This week’s episode is here for you! Sara, mostly, and Rob (because he is BAD at it) will try and help you weave through the difficult process of making your vast, detailed, and different world come to life without putting your players into a lore dump coma.

In-Party Conflict Done Right

Fighting a group of Orcs, goblins, or running from a fleet of pirate ships all come with a certain sense of banter and conflict. But when players decide to raise that conflict within the team, the results can’t be controlled by the Storyteller. Feelings can be hurt, friendships soured, and games broken up all over something being taken too far. This week Sara and Rob talk about inner party conflict, and how to handle issue resolution at your table, so we can stay focused on enjoying the game.

Tactical vs Narrative Storytelling

Each RPG has a feel and tone when it comes to how its rules play into the way the story is told. D&D, White Wolf, 7th Sea, and Mouse Guard all have very different takes on what a challenge is, how you can overcome it, and what the results are to the story. Some of these systems focus heavily on the narrative, and allow for a broad interpretation of how the rules play out, whereas others strive to describe in detail the interactions and consequences of each action. This week Sara and Rob explore the in’s and out’s of Tactical and Narrative styles of Storytelling.

System Spotlight : Numanera

Set a billion years in the future, Numenara offers a glimpse of a distant civilization in “the Ninth World.” Using the Cypher system it explores the idea that a character starts with a sentence. In this week’s episode, Sara and Rob dive into Monte Cook’s unique world and explore what it has to offer.

Recovering from Stumbles

There are a number of ways a TTRPG game can go sideways. Perhaps the players killed your main villain in Session 1. Perhaps your players are fighting, and cannot be civil at the table together. Perhaps you believed every contingency was covered in your game preparations, but the players chose the one option you DIDN’T think of. This week, Sara & Rob discuss how to recover from the unexpected twists and turns – both in-character and out-of-character – that can make our games feel “ruined.”
